Problematic lyrics in classical music

1 min readFeb 7, 2025

I’ve recently started learning Hindustani vocal music and am a little taken aback by some of the lyrics in the bandishes (songs).

A recurring theme in many of the songs are Krishna’s antics. While they sound beautiful they describe behaviour that is, to put it bluntly, harassment.

Consider these examples, just two of several. If you know Hindi or Braj, these are self explanatory. The gist is that Krishna is bothering maidens out to gather water.

Centuries after these lyrics were written, these are the same themes that play out in our films. Not nice.

Raag Bhairavi:

Dagar chalat chede / shyaam sakhi ri
Mai dungi gaari / nipat anari

Paniya bharat mori / gaagar phori
Na hak baiyan / marori jhak jhori

Raag Khamaj:

Bharan jaat jal ho panihari / Mag rokat thare kunwar kanhaiya / Maanat naahi mat piya more hori

Laagat dar more shaam sundar ko / Ab jal bharan ko kaise jaun ri

PS. I do know that this is considered a form of bhakti poetry. As literature, it’s part and parcel of a large body of work. But instilling it in young minds as part of a pedagogy is to endorse it.
